In Chaucer’s age, long pilgrimages to holy sites were accompanied by all necessities to ease the burdens of the journey. One of these would have been a handmade rush or twig cage for birds to fill the night air with song. The mourning dove was such a traveler, much as is depicted in this medieval style hand-painted/fired glass plaque. Even today, this dove still fills the early evening sky at Rabbit Trace with its mournful call.
Surrounding the plaque is Youghiogheny lime green, deep blue and pale yellow stipple stained glass, all copper foiled, silver soldered, patinated and waxed. An antiqued zinc border, signed in copper plate, is then applied. And finally a custom Don Scott Spanish cedar frame, with corner keys, completes this unique work.
